About Your Examination – Pilots

Whether you are training for your private pilot’s licence or require a renewed medical certificate, a medical examination is a mandatory requirement. At Manchester Medicals, we are here to ensure your medical goes smoothly and comfortably.

Your EASA Class 1, Class 2 or LAPL medical will take approximately 1 hour, so please allow plenty of time.

What to Bring

• A Photo ID is compulsory. We cannot complete the medical without it.
• Your previous medical certificate, if applicable.
• If you wear glasses and contact lenses, bring them along. If you wear contacts, you must be prepared to remove them, so bring your glasses as well.
• Recent glasses/contact lens prescription (within 3 months) if applicable.
• Completed Form MED160 for Class 1 renewal, Class 2 and LAPL examinations.

What to Expect

• We will discuss your medical history and any problems you may have had since your last medical assessment.
• A physical examination, including the heart and lungs, the nervous system, abdomen, weight and height, pulses and blood pressure, hearing tests and vision.
• A urine sample is required for testing. Be sure to come with a full bladder.
• Sometimes, other tests may become necessary, such as an ECG, which is a reading of the electrical activity of the heart. The requirements for this depend on your age and medical history. Click here for details. This test does involve placing sticky pads on the chest. Ladies may be required to remove their bra, and anyone with a lot of hair may be required to shave the patches where the pads attach.
• For Class 1 pilots, extra tests may be required (finger-prick blood testing for haemoglobin and/or lipids, or extra vision tests by an optician or ophthalmologist).

If it makes you feel more comfortable, feel free to bring someone with you to act as a chaperone. Alternatively, we might be able to arrange a chaperone to be present, so please discuss this ahead of time.

• Occasionally, the ECG needs to be over-read by a consultant cardiologist, who will charge for this.
• If you meet the required CAA/EASA standards, we will be able to issue your medical certificate on the day of the medical.
• If you do not meet the standards, the medical will either be “deferred” or you may be declared “unfit”. We will guide you through the process of obtaining any additional required referrals or tests.  Any extra work we are required to perform (such as writing referrals or organising further tests) is known as “casework” – This will incur an extra charge. 

Chaperone Policy

Your comfort and dignity is our first priority. Your doctor is a male doctor usually working alone. A chaperone can be arranged (usually a registered nurse), if you would feel more comfortable with somebody else present. Please advise if you require a chaperone at the time of booking, and this can be arranged. Please be aware that not all appointment times may be available in this instance, depending on the availability of the chaperone. You are also welcome to bring a friend/relative with you if you would feel more comfortable.
