Everything to Know Before Your FISO Medical

Having a medical examination can be a daunting prospect, especially if it happens to be your first FISO medical. This is why we’ve compiled this complete guide on everything you need to know before your FISO medical assessment. We go over the position of a FISO (Flight Information Services Officer), the medical standards for a FISO, and all the information you need to know about the FISO Medical.

By the end of this blog post, you’ll have a much clearer understanding of the FISO medical and what you’ll need to do well in the medical examination.

Required Medical Standards for a FISO

Since a flight information services officer has a comprehensive list of tasks required to be undertaken, the medical standards for a FISO are fairly specific compared to other positions. The Civil Aviation Authority demands that FISO have 6/12 vision or better when corrected, with a degree of colour perception that is normal on the Ishihara test.

In regards to auditory requirements, a flight information services officer should be able to hear a forced whisper in each ear at a distance of two meters.

What Does the FISO Medical Consist of?

We begin every FISO medical with a discussion about your relevant medical history along with any health-related issues you might be having recently. After this, we conduct a general examination similar to that conducted by your GP, except that we also check hearing and vision to a different standard and that a urine examination is also required.

Make sure to bring a piece of photo identification, your last medical certificate, any medical documents you might feel are relevant and your glasses if your vision requires correction.

Duration of Validity of FISO Medical

Your FISO medical lasts a minimum of 6 months, with longer periods of validity depending on your age. Between 18 and 50 years the medical declaration is valid for 60 months from the last day of the month in which the medical examination took place. Between the ages of 50 and 65, your medical declaration is valid for 24 months, going down to 12 months for those aged between 65 and 70. Lastly, for those 70 or over, the medical examination lasts six months.
