Medicals for Large Goods Vehicles

If you are a driver of a large goods vehicle, then by law you are required to pass a medical examination before you begin working.

LGV medical examinations are to ensure you are safe to be driving on the road and can do so without endangering your own life and the lives of others on the road.

There are two parts to medical examinations, both of which need to be passed in order for a driver to be deemed road worthy.

The First Part of the LGV Medical

the initial stage of the LGV medical process consists of an interview in which the doctor and candidate discuss any pre-existing medical conditions that they are aware of. Any conditions, illnesses or any other aspect of the driver’s health that could interfere with their ability to drive safely has to be disclosed.

If they are not upfront and entirely honest and an accident occurs, they will likely be charged with criminal negligence.

The Second Part of the LGV Medical

The second stage of the LGV medical process consists of an actual physical examination. A doctor at this point will check the patient’s vital signs, vision etc. The examination usually takes no longer than 30 minutes.

At this point, the doctor or attending physician will fill out a DVLA form that will be sent directly to the relevant authorities for review.

If the patient passes both of these stages, then they will be cleared.

Who Can Carry Out the LGV Medical?

When it comes to the LGV medical test, any registered doctor within the UK can carry out the medical examination, there is no formal requirements apart from them being a registered doctor.
