Preparing for Your Bus Driver Medicals

Having passed your bus driver medicals is an important part of being able to operate and drive passenger carrying vehicles like buses and shuttles. This is why we’ve written up this helpful blog post outlining the bus driver medical examination along with anything you need to be prepared for the examination.

Keep on reading below for all the information regarding the passenger carrying vehicle medical examinations and assessments.

Fill Out and Prepare Necessary Forms

Arriving at your bus driver medicals and realising you’re missing a crucial piece of documentation is one of the worst feelings, and it shouldn’t be why you fail the assessment. Make sure you have a piece of photo identification, details of any medical conditions and history and a completed DVLA D4 form if applicable.

Just as important is that you remember to bring your glasses and most recent optician’s prescription if you wear glasses or contact lenses. Bringing the glasses is necessary as we’ll test your eyes with and without them.

When Do I Need a DVLA D4 Form?

You will typically only need a D4 form if it’s your first application, with subsequent check-ups and renewals not requiring it. Keep in mind there are a few select conditions that ask for D4 forms again if you over a certain age, licence has expired, and a few other specific conditions.

Note that if you forget to fill and print out a D4 at home, Manchester Medicals always have some spare forms in the office.

What Does the Medical Examination Consist of?

Once you’ve got all your documents in order and handed over, it’s time for the medical examination. This examination is fairly straightforward and is a full physical examination like you might have at your GP. Vision tests and blood pressure checks are performed, and we also perform a urine test screening for diabetes.

We also sit down with you and discuss any medical problems you have and any medication you’re taking or might need in case of a medical emergency. It’s important that the information you give the doctor is truthful and that you are never keeping any medical condition hidden from the doctor.

Preparing yourself Physically for the Examination

While the bus driver medicals aren’t particularly physically intensive, it’s important that you keep your body in good shape for the medical and year round. Weekly cardiovascular exercise like running, cycling or swimming are great ways to keep your general health in good condition.

You can add in some weekly resistance training like bodyweight exercises or weighted exercises to strengthen muscular endurance, and you should be more than prepared.
