Ensure that Your Indicators and Signals Are Fully Working
As well as having a full HGV driver medical, ensuring that you remain safe on the road is hugely important.
One of the very basics for road safety is ensuring that your signals are working. Signals are your way of telling other drivers on the road your intentions whilst driving, if you want to turn or change direction- they are your way of alerting drivers.
For Long haul drivers that are driving on the motorway, the ability to let drivers know you are changing lanes is paramount. Failing to let them know could result in a fatal crash.
Take Regular Breaks from Driving
When driving long haul, it’s important that you take regular breaks from driving to ensure you stay alert and vigilant whilst driving on the road.
The science behind it says that taking breaks allows your cognitive receptors to rest and rejuvenate. These receptors help with your alertness, reaction time and critical thinking.
We know that you have places to be, but trying to squeeze a quick 15-minute break in every 4 hours is definitely achievable.
Think about your safety and those around you and take a break.
Get an Up to Date HGV Driver Medical
Having a fully up to date HGV driver medical is not only a legal requirement but it will also help keep you safe and others on the road.
At your medical, you will be asked to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, medicals, treatments or past conditions that you have had.
Your reflexes and senses will be tested to ensure that you are safe to operate a HGV.
This first examination will be followed by a second at which you will be given a full physical examination by the Doctor. They will check that you are physically able to drive a HGV.
If you pass your examination, then you will be able to drive a HGV.
