The Professional Medical Testing Every Licensed Pilot Needs
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requires all pilots, no matter their level or field, to undergo certified and specially designed pilot medicals in order to obtain or renew their license.
At Manchester Medicals, we have the honour and privilege to provide you with the highest calibre pilot medicals. We assure you that our examination process is always professional, thorough and swift.
Our experience in the field
We are one of the pioneers in private clinical pilot medicals; in fact, our founder is certified in the field and a former trainee pilot.
Dr Chris Lydiatt, a CAA certified Aero-medical Examiner (AME), handles all of our pilot medicals himself.
Certification comes in different classes
As there are different fields and classifications of pilots licensing, it is natural that there are different classes of pilot medicals.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has created three main classes of pilot medicals.
- EASA Class 1: required for all professional pilots; commercial (CPL), multi-pilot (MPL) and airline transport (ATPL).
- EASA Class 2: required for pilots of balloons (BPL), sailplanes (SPL) and private planes (PPL) with all its subcategories.
- Light Aircraft (LAPL) with all its subcategories.
How does the examination go
All classes of pilot medicals share the same basic procedure. It normally takes around one hour; starting with a brief interview regarding your medical history or any recent concerns you might have since your last medical. Dr Lydiatt will then move on with you to the physical part of the assessment; this generally includes an examination of all the vitals and basics of a medical check-up.
Dr Lydiatt would be checking your blood pressure and pulse, heart and lungs, vision, hearing, nervous system, and abdomen, as well as measuring your height and weight.
A urine sample is also mandatory so, make sure you brought a full bladder to the medical.
In some cases, further testing or examination might be required according to how the basic check-up goes or in accordance with your medical history.
Get your official medical certificate on the same day
Upon passing your pilot medical, we will be providing you with your officially stamped and signed medical certificate on the same day.
In the unfortunate case of not passing the medical (declared unfit) or needing more examinations to meet the standards (being deferred), we would be happy to guide you through the process that you need to go through from then on.
Kindly note, that for any written referral or casework done, there could be extra charges to your medical
Prices and wait times
We are always trying to not have you wait long from the time you book an appointment before you can sit for your test. We currently accommodate appointments for pilot medicals at short notice and we continue to try and make this time even shorter.
As for the pricing system, you can find a detailed table with all our basic prices and additional tests that might be needed on a case-by-case basis. We encourage you to please check it.
Having said that, our pilot medicals normally start at £154 for Class 1, £133 for Class 2 and £140 for LAPL medicals.
